New Varieties 2001

  • The name of the species, native to Japan and northeast Asia, originates from the Greek, draco, a dragon and cephale, a head. Appropriately, the common name is Dragonhead; these two selections are named after the revered, world famous Mount Fujiyama.

These long-lived perennials, with particularly distinctive foliage, will grow to a height of 30 cm (12") and form dark green bushes with needle-like glossy leaves. The blossoms, up to 3 cm (1,2") long, are arranged in terminal flower spikes and bloom from the beginning of June until the middle of August. 'Fuji Blue' has brilliant blue flowers with a light blue lip. 'Fuji White' has pure white flowers and a lip with a hint of light blue. Either is suitable for rock gardens and perennial gardens in sunny to partially shady locations.

  • Popular varieties of Shasta Daisies are widespread. But none has the filigreed look like this one and, hence the name, 'Filigran'. It is one of the earliest flowering varieties beginning in May and lasting until September.

Just like all Shasta Daisies, the flowers are white with yellow centers, and 'Filigran' blooms abundantly. The distinctive pinnate leaves stand out clearly compared with other varieties and the foliage is healthy and very dark green. Height is 60 cm (2 feet) and 'Filigran' grows well in any average, well-drained soil in full sun.

  • This is a winter hardy selection from Gilberg Farms that has handled temperatures of -20¡C (-4¡F). Few flowering plants can rival 'Galaxy'. It is a large flowering mix with an exceptional color display with saucer-shaped blossoms up to 25 cm (10") in diameter. These include a combination of colors of pink and white with red centers; plus pure colors of white, light pink, rose, dark rose, and light red to dark red.

Strong stems, vigorous upright growth of up to 120 cm (48") and healthy foliage, characterize the remarkable 'Galaxy'. Like the less hardy 'Southern Belle Mix', seedlings of 'Galaxy' will flower the first year if planted early in the season. However, they will need two years to fully mature and prefer a full sunny position with sufficient water supply. Small plants appreciate some winter protection.

  • The Vervaeneana-Group has existed for a long time within the species, Aquilegia vulgaris. For the most part, most had variegated, yellow or marbled leaves. The previously introduced, 'Woodside Strain' contained these forms.

'Woodside Gold', however, is a selection of strong, golden yellow spring foliage that gradually turns to light yellow. The colorful foliage contrasts attractively with the blue and rose-colored flowers.

'Woodside Variegata', on the other hand, has all the year round yellow-white-green spotted, variegated foliage and the nodding, bell-shaped blossoms are dark violet.

More than 90% of the plants of each selection correspond to the descriptions above. These distinctively colorful columbines are well suited for sunny to partially shady sites.

  • Among lavenders, 'Hidcote' and 'Hidcote Blue' are unquestionable the most popular cutting-grown cultivars, as is 'Hidcote Blue Strain' for the seed-grown cultivars. Take your pick among propagation methods, but either means, has produced variable results with an inconsistent and unpredictable product from nursery to nursery.

Under the name 'Hidcote Superior', Jelitto will now be able to unmistakably market the seed grown from our very own production of 'Hidcote Blue'. The result will be of consistent quality with deep violet-blue flowers, compact growth and silver-grey foliage.
