New Varieties 2020

  • Some say Siss-er-ink-ee-um, some say Siss-er-inch-ee-um.
Whether you ink or inch, this beautiful little blue-eyed member of the Iridaceae (Iris family) will make its mark in your garden life. Smaller in stature than its relative S. angustifolium but larger in flower, ’Moody Blues’ is a beauty. This vigorous species of Idaho blue-eyed grass grows naturally in moist open meadows. Flowering May through July, the variety macounii is native to Washington State to British Columbia, and named for John Macoun, an Irish-born Canadian naturalist and explorer of the Canadian prairies.

Deep inky-blue centers surround bright golden sepals and petals of violet blue. These dramatic colors set the mood for delightful garden combinations whether planted in rockery, container, sunny garden bed or in the front of Prairie Garden like plantings. Plants grow to about 4-5 inches tall and 6 inches wide and are a food source for multiple pollinators and beneficial insects. Growers and gardeners alike will delight in Sisyrinchium ’Moody Blues’.

  • There is satisfaction in breeding multi-use plants for growers and gardeners. Do you know the useful Bulbine frutescens? This South African native is a succulent leaved clumping plant with lovely spikes of flowers in spring and fall. Its leaves yield a jelly similar to Aloe Vera that soothes burns, various skin ailments and instantly moisturizes dry skin with a neutral refreshing fragrance.

Jelitto Perennial Seeds’ breeding program introduces the Bulbine frutescens Avera Sun-Series ’Avera Sunrise Yellow’ and ’Avera Sunset Orange’… two distinct color strains with triple size blooms (compared to the species) that are first year flowering from seed. Cheerful yellow or orange stars grace these easy to grow drought tolerant succulents.

The deer resistant Avera Sun-Series can be grown year-round in frost free climates, as a patio plant, or will happily re-seed in your temperate garden guaranteeing flowers and soothing gel for next season.

  • Allium schoenoprasum, or simply the common chive, is a most well-known, useful and humble plant. Besides being grown for its culinary uses, its drought tolerance has leant itself to green roof and wall applications.

You see very little use in an ornamental setting, maybe because the ordinary chive lacked good flower colors. Jelitto Perennial Seeds has focused on Multiple Use plants… edibles with ornamental qualities, developing clear distinct colors and consistent sturdy medium sized foliage. We have bred what we think is a multiple winner.

We are proud to introduce ’The Ornamental One’ Chive Series! ’Pink One’, ’Purple One’, and ’White One’ flowering plants available for the first time in single color seed strains. First year flowering, deliciously edible and highly ornamental, all three colors are uniform in height and flowering time, with good sturdy leaf blades. Multi-use plants are very desirable these days… garden to table… garden to vase… massed in garden settings… or use in container plantings.

Just say, “I’ll have the ’Pink One’”.
